Q1 - How do I become a volunteer for TriAthy?

We're currently looking for up to 150 people to be available on the day to help run the best triathlon in Ireland this year. No training is required. Watch your friends compete with a "birds-eye" view. All marshals will get a free event marshal t-shirt.

Q2. What are the TriAthy race distance?

There are two options:

TriAthy Olympic consists of a 1.5km swim - 40km bike - 10km run.

TriAthy Sprint consists of a 0.75km swim - 20km bike - 5km run

Q3. Can a relay team of 3 complete?

Yes. A relay team consists of 3 people:

1 to complete the swim section, 1 to complete the cycle section and 1 to complete the run section.

Q4. What are the entry fees for the TriAthy this year?

The entry fees are set out in the Race Info Section.

Q5. How many participants will TriAthy allow for?

We expect around 2,000 people to take part in 2009.

Based on prior years, the breakdown is 40% Olympic participants / 60% Sprint participants.

Q6. Is TriAthy a Triathlon Ireland sanctioned event?

Yes.

In order to compete, all TriAthy participants must be members of Triathlon Ireland. To become a member of Triathlon Ireland you may purchase membership online via www.triathlonireland.com.

If you are not a Triathlon Ireland member - you may still compete in the event by paying a Eur15.00 One Day Licence fee. This fee is paid when entering Triathy.

Q7. I am traveling from outside of Ireland to get to the race. How do I get to Athy?

Athy is located in South Kildare on the N78 road between Kilcullen and Castlecomer. All entrants will receive a pre-race information pack the week before raceday which will provide detailed directions.

There are numerous sources for advice on training. The best way is to make contact with your local triathlon club.

Q11. What time will the race start?

Your start will depend on the wave you are allocated. Exact start times will be confirmed closer to the race date. All participants must be registered, body marked and have picked up their timing chip well-before the starting time.

We expect a modified timetable for 2009, so please be aware of your exact starting time. These will be published about 2 weeks before raceday.

Q12. Is there a staggered swim start?

Yes. Both TriAthy Olympic and TriAthy Sprint distance triathlons will have up to 10 well staggered waves.

Q13. Do you have a course map?

Course maps and course videos will be available in March 2009.

If you are returning to TriAthy 2009, please be advised that slight course modifications may be made for the 2009 event.

Q15. Do you accept fax or phone-in registrations?

No. We only accept online registrations.

Q16. Are there any benefits to registering early?

Yes - Here they are:

- It's cheaper. TriAthy has Early Bird Registration Fees where you can get a substantial discount by registering early (This applies to the first 150 entrants to TriAthy 2009)

- Guaranteed Race T-Shirt if you register early.

- You set an early fitness goal

- You avoid the 'late registration' fees which kick-in from 1 April 2009 (April Fools Day!!!)

Q17. May I give or sell my race number to someone else?

Under the conditions of entry, Entries are not transferable.

Q18. Will I receive confirmation of my entry?

Yes - You will receive 2 email confirmations once you enter the race:

The first will be an email outlining your entry details (name / address / telephone etc)

The second will be a payment receipt from PayPal.

We recommend that you print both of these receipts off in case of any issues.

Q19. What are the swim distances?

For TriAthy OLYMPIC - Swim is 1.5km

For TriAthy SPRINT - Swim is 0.75km

Q20. What equipment is needed for the swim?

Timing Chip and Swim cap (provided in the race pack), goggles or mask (optional), wetsuit (mandatory) and swimsuit or tri suit.

Fins & other propulsion devices are not allowed.

Details of where you will be able to hire wetsuits from for the triathlon will be published shortly.

Q22. Are you allowed to use a mountain bike?

Yes. You may use a mountain bike, hybrid/city bike, road bike or triathlon bike.

Q23. What equipment is mandatory for the bike section?

A bike and a bike helmet are required.

Your bike must be in proper working condition with your bike race number properly attached.

We recommend having your bicycle checked through a reputable bike shop prior to the event.

We also advise to bring along all necessary equipment for changing a flat tire or making minor adjustments to your bike.

Q24. Will 'drafting; be allowed?

No.

The "Draft Zone" is a rectangle surrounding every competitor that is 3 metres wide and extends to 7 metres behind the front wheel of the competitor's bicycle. The front edge of the front bicycle wheel will define the centre of the leading 3-metre edge of the rectangle.

A competitor may enter the draft zone but must be seen to be making forward progress. A maximum of 15 seconds will be allowed for a competitor to pass through the draft zone. ( ITU/ETU RULE 2005)

Q26. What mandatory equipment do I need for the run?

Race number and timing chip (will be included in your race pack which you will receive at registration).

Race numbers are to be attached on the front of your body and timing chips must be securely strapped to your ankle.

One per lap for the SPRINT race

Two for the OLYMPIC race (at 2.5km and at 6km)

Q28. What is the transition area?

The transition area is a common area where participants rack their bike, run and swim gear before and during the race.

It is also your assigned spot where you will transition from swim to bike and bike to run.

Relay teams have a designated region in the t-area where they exchange their timing chip strap from swimmer to cyclist and cyclist to runner.

Q29. What time does the transition area open and close in the morning?

This will be announced closer to the event date.

Q30. Who is allowed in the transition area?

Only race participants who have been body marked, have picked up their timing chip and have attached their bike race number to their bike, and transition area volunteers and race officials are the only people allowed into the transition area.

For safety, please no family members, friends, or spectators in the transition area.

A spectator area will be cordoned off alongside the transition area, so supporters are guaranteed not to miss any of the race action.
