IRISH NATIONAL STANDARD DISTANCE CHAMPIONSHIP RACE 2008

COURSE OVERVIEW

1.5km Swim - 40km Cycle - 10km Run

TriAthy Olympic is Irelands fastest, flattest Olympic Distance race. If you have been trying to beat a PB, or if you are trying to break the elusive 2 hours time, then TriAthy Olympic is engineered just for you.

Over 1,100m of the 1,500m swim is downstream. The cycle course is on closed, flat roads perfect for chasing both your rival and your new PB. The run course is equally fast, with practically no hills and an alignment that follows the course of the river. The compact transition area sits neatly between all three sections, minimising your T1 and T2 splits.

Beginning just 100m north of the Athy Boat Slip, the Olympic swim flows through Athy's main Crom-a-boo Bridge at the 700m mark, heading towards Athy's famous Horsebridge at the 1,100m mark, before turning beyond the bridge for the final 400m upstream stretch - a bit like facing the finishing hill at Cheltenham!

Emerging from the River Barrow, transition is less than 50 metres away, and the cycle course begins immediately outside the transition zone. The 40km cycle route consists of two 'Out-and-Back' 20km stretches of the R417. The total variation in altitude over 40km is just 20m.

Once complete, competitors head through transition and back to the riverbank where the 10km run begins. The Run route hugs the banks of the scenic River Barrow for over 6km. Urban Athy gives way to a very tranquil picturesque landscape and atmosphere. The final 4km brings competitors back into Athy town on the main road (R417) where the finishline awaits along with your many friends and supporters.
