COURSE OVERVIEW
750m Swim - 20km Cycle - 5km Run
TriAthy Sprint begins just above Athy’s Boat slip (to the North of the town centre), where you will join over 500 others in entering the River Barrow. The 2008 race will probably have six starting waves spaced by 10min intervals.
The Sprint Swim Section is 100% downstream, ensuring that everyone enjoys the opportunity of swimming a great first leg.
As your friends and supporters watch from the surrounds of Crom-a-boo Bridge and White Castle, you will swim through and emerge onto a specially constructed pontoon leading to floating jetties at the Athy Courthouse – just metres from transition.
On the other side of transition the Sprint Cycle Course begins, taking you by the Athy Heritage Centre and towards Carlow on the flat R417. The Cycle Course is an 'out-and-back' route - 10km out to a townland called Maganey, and 10km back to the TriAthy transition. The entire cycle route follows close to River Barrow, and with just 20m deviation in altitude along the entire route, you will be able to push hard on Ireland’s flattest tri-section - especially since the road will be closed to normal vehicular traffic (application pending from the local authority).
On your return to the TriAthy transition at the Athy Courthouse, disembark your bike and proceed through transition back towards the Riverbank where your 5km run takes you along the River Barrow towpath. There are two mini-loops on this run section - a circuit which will bring competitors along the River's canal cut, towards Ardreigh lock, to the Carlow road and then back to the towpath once more - this is to ensure that you get the full 5km for your buck! (Be sure to check the race map so that you know and understand the course!).
Our friendly marshals will be positioned on the day to keep you on track. Once the second mini-loop is complete you head back towards the finishline and the triathlon supporters near the Athy Courthouse and transition.
